THE STRAW HIEROGLYPHS

THE STRAW HIEROGLYPHS

directed by  Teresa & Andrzej Wełmiński

Theatre Workshops in Kishinev (Chisinau)

Eugene Ionesco Theatre

The workshops took place on the centennial birthday anniversary of Tadeusz Kantor,  one of the greatest reformers of the 20th century theatre, the creator of the Cricot-2 Theatre, whose achievements remain unsurpassed up to the present.

The workshops were run by Teresa & Andrzej Wełmiński, members of the Cricot-2 Theatre and Tadeusz Kantor's associates.

The methods of work emerged from many years of theatre practice worked out by these artists, especially invoking to the idea of the autonomous theatre,  in which all components of the work are of equal importance and reaching the fundamental principles of contemporary art, highlighting the role of risk, creativity, uncertainty, irreversibility and co-responsibility for the final shape of the performance.

The workshops included many various activities and conversations which have led to the intensive creative state of awareness.  They have eventually evolved into a vibrant creative process in which an actor-participant reaches down to the deepest levels of his own psyche and recollections, to unite himself with the universal and archetypal elements. In this process there occur continuous feedbacks between all participants and evolving elements, slowly the synthesis crystallize and bonding of all the elements commences.

The plot, semantic and verbal meaning builds up during the whole spectacle creation process and eventually becomes its integral whole.

In the result of work with the young artist from the Theatre Faculty of the Kishinev Fine Arts Academy there was created the performance titled The Straw Hieroglyphs. The structure of this work includes numerous digressions, sound and verbal figures and references to the various phenomena of both contemporary art and Baroque works of Dymitr Kantemir, as well.
